Frank Jr.'s Retelling of N. Riddle "Skin" Arrangement

Ted deCerchio
I stand corrected by Frank, jr.'s recent, more realistic retelling of Nelson Riddle's arranging of 'I've Got you Under My Skin" on 1956's album "Songs for Swingin' Lovers." I found common ground with Frank jr.'s assertion that Mr. Riddle was (to paraphrase)self-effacing & humble; he certainly downplayed accepting any glory for "Skin" arrangement when he said to me"it's a glamorization of the story." Here was a workhorse who did not seek glory in arranging 4 extra songs, one of which is a classic. Thus Mr. Riddle was a great compliment for Frank,Sr.
Also thanks to Frank Jr. for his insight into Bill Miller & his piano intro to Moonlight Mood from sinatra-Riddle's album "Moonlight Sinatra", a very "stylistically Impressionistic"album of Riddle arrangements. In riddle's biography "September in the Rain"(another great Riddle work)it is talked about how he was strongly influenced by Impressionist Debussy. Listen to Moonlight Sinatra & my favorite cut,a Spanish "The Moon Was Yellow."

"Pass Me By" is, indeed, the title of the song you're looking for. Released in 1964 off Frank's SOFTLY, AS I LEAVE YOU album, this rollicking tune was written by Cy Coleman and Carolyn Leigh and introduced in the movie "Father Goose," starring Cary Grant and Leslie Caron. The song also appears in Sinatra's THE COMPLETE REPRISE STUDIO RECORDINGS, released in 1995 and 1998. Both of these albums/collections are now out of print; however, you may be able to find a CD copy of SOFTLY, AS I LEAVE YOU on amazon.com. They're usually sold as "New," "Used," or "Collectible," but be prepared to shell out!! They don't come cheap. Happy hunting!! Frank & Sammy's Handprints @ 500 Club

Ted deCerchio
When I was "17" I visited Atlantic City, it was in the late 60's & I decided to see for myself the famous "500 Club" on Missouri Ave. It was in a rundown neighborhood by that time with "Club Harlem" right down the street, where Frank would visit Ella & Billie for a song or two.During the day the clubs were closed or probably no longer in operation.I walked around to the side entrance of the 500 club & saw that it was a small, intimate club, the kind Sinatra preferred. This was a getaway from the hustle of show business in New York, a stone's throw. The highlight was looking @ the hand & footprints on the front sidewalk of the club. I remember that Frank's hands were small for such an entertainment giant.
Around the year 2000 I revisited Atlantic City to see if the 500 Club was still extant. I went into a bar & asked if the Club was still around,& everyone in the bar laughed @ me, saying it had been torn down with the inception of the Casinos. I asked "What about the sidewalk handprints of Frank & Sammy?" they all said "gone", that "the only handprints you're going to see in A.C. are Michael Jackson's in front of Resorts." It's a shame not even a street sign or plaque remains where the 50's Rat Pack entertained themselves & others.

If you're really serious about Sinatra, then why not consider becoming a member of the "SINATRA FAMILY FORUM" at www.sinatrafamilyforum.com?? This is just a marvelous website where you can discuss everything related to Mr. Sinatra's music and much, much more. Be prepared to upload your avatar, which is a picture of yourself from the shoulders up. Then decide on a password...and that's pretty much it. You'll then be able to converse with a wide range of people from all over the world. Believe me, there are several people that belong to this website with incredible knowledge of just about everything you'd ever want to know about Mr. S and his music. Your question about a complete and accurate list of his albums is available on this website, but just too numerous to mention here. If you do decide to join, I'm sure you'll enjoy it immensely....and you'll also learn a lot in the process. Be polite and be courteous. Abusive language and confrontational rhetoric will NOT be tolerated. Be sure to read Nancy Sinatra, Jr.'s opening statement on the website and you'll get a good idea of what the Sinatra Community is all about. Enjoy!!!".....when Sinatra paints a portrait, the tones and colors are his alone." ~Sid Mark~

Each label will obviously have their own collections, with only rare exceptions allowing crossover.

You would need a box collection from each label/era to get what you want i think.

Would include the following box sets: "THE SONG IS YOU," 5 CD's on RCA; "THE COLUMBIA YEARS 1943-1952: THE COMPLETE RECORDINGS," 12 CD's on Columbia; "THE CAPITOL YEARS," 21 CD's on Capitol; and "THE COMPLETE REPRISE STUDIO RECORDINGS," 20 CD's on Reprise. There ARE less expensive routes to take here with your collection; however, these four box sets will give you an excellent look at about 90% of Frank's seven-decade singing career. The remaining 10% can be obtained on single CD's and other box sets. Happy hunting!!! ".....when Sinatra paints a portrait, the tones and colors are his alone." ~Sid Mark~
