Hello Martin,
don't worry

Hello Martin, don't worry about your English, your message is fine. Here is the story of how Sinatra came to sing a song in Polish language: In 1947, Frank Sinatra played the role of a priest ("Father Paul") in the movie "The Miracle Of The Bells" (RKO Radio Pictures), alongside Fred MacMurray and Alida Valli. In the movie, there is a song called "Ever Homeward". This song is an English adaption of the Polish traditional song "Powrót" (by Kasimiercz Lubomirski). In the film, Sinatra sings the English version, while Alida Valli, who plays "Olga Treskova", an immigrant from Poland, sings the song in Polish language. However, when the work for the movie was finished, Sinatra also made a recording of the song "Ever Homeward" for his record label Columbia Records. He recorded it with an orchestra conducted by Axel Stordahl on December 8, 1947 - and in this recording, Sinatra sings one refrain in English language and one in Polish language. The recording was issued in 1948 as a single by Columbia Records. Many years later, in January 1982, on American Television, there was a big TV Special called "Let Poland Be Poland!". This special was a benefit in support of the Polish Solidarnosc movement, and it was broadcast in many countries around the world. Many international stars and politicians appeared in this special. And also, Frank Sinatra! Frank Sinatra, in the special, makes a short announcement which reads as follows: >>"I’m not a politician – I’m a singer. But when I see people being forced from their homeland to seek freedom someplace else, it makes me realise all over again how grateful I am for the freedom I have, and how terrible I would feel if I had to leave the country I love. When the troubles began in Poland this winter, I remembered a song I recorded sometime ago; it’s based on a Polish folk song. I sang it in both English and Polish. If I were a politician, I would probably make a speech right now. But since I’m not - here is the song and it’s called „Ever Homeward“ or in Polish it’s called „Powrót“.<< After this statement, they played his 1947 Columbia studio recording of the song (so, he did not sing it again, they just played the old recording). I think, Martin, that this may be the show you had in mind when you wrote your message. The 1947 recording of "Ever Homeward" has been issued on CD as well. You can find it on CD #8 of the 12-CD-Set "The Columbia Years: The Complete Recordings" (Columbia/Legacy). I hope this is of help to you. Best wishes and musical Sinatra greetings to Poland, our neighbourhood state, Bernhard (from Germany). |

This, along with many of the Reprise albums, are long out of print. Unfortunately, most of the Sinatra experts don't expect any re-issues to be released any time soon. Outside of the flea markets and old record stores, your best bet would be to check Amazon. com. You'll most likely still be able to find a few used and new copies (CD's) offered by private sellers. Bear in mind these CD's won't be cheap, so be prepared to dig deep!!".....when Sinatra paints a portrait, the tones and colors are his alone." ~Sid Mark~ |

I, too, was moved to tears watching this wonderful video. It's hard to imagine that Mr. S waited almost 37 years to come back to this beautiful song. His first recordings of "Body and Soul" were done back in late 1947 with arrangements by the great Axel Stordahl. I often think of all the beautiful songs that Frank never recorded--of course, too numerous to mention here. This, though, is just marvelous footage of The Master at work. At 68 years young, Frank STILL had that look of a true professional, perfecting his craft. God, how I miss him. ".....when Sinatra paints a portrait, the tones and colors are his alone." ~Sid Mark~ |

The song is called "Same Old Song and Dance." It is a bonus track on the readily available album, "Come Dance With Me!" It can also be found in "The Complete Capitol Singles Collection." (There are other albums that have this song, but that are either not readily available or easy to find.) Don't hide your scars. They make you who you are - Frank |

It was funny to see this thread.....the loveliest gift that I received for Christmas this year (aside from the gifts from my young son) was a gorgeous framed print of this album cover! I had actually never seen it (or heard of it for that matter!) so it was a lovely surprise. Now, I am just trying to figure out the perfect place to hang it?????? Possibly bedside |

I do find that people our age don't hate his music, but they just don't prefer to listen to it. I sang a couple of his songs at some talent shows I was in, and people told me that the song was great. I actually got a few people to listen to the other Sinatra songs on my ipod. |

I love Frank Sinatra's music. I'm 18 and my name's Nicole. I first really listened to it when i was 14. I have a poster on my bedroom wall of him. I haven't seen alot of the movies he was in yet but I look forward to soon. I only know a few other Sinatra fans in my area which is always disappointing. the man had an edgy and beautiful voice. Ol' Blue eyes was amazing. |
