For the first time, Frank Sinatra’s greatest recordings for Capitol Records and his own Reprise Records have been gathered for one stellar collection with insightful track notes written by Frank Sinatra, Jr.
Best of the Best’s chronological tracklist leads with 1953’s “I’ve Got The World On A String,” followed by 12 other classic tracks Sinatra recorded for Capitol between 1953 and 1960, including “Young At Heart,” “You Make Me Feel So Young,” “All The Way,” and “Come Fly With Me,” as well as the Sinatra recording that is the theme of “Married With Children,” “Love And Marriage.” 10 of Sinatra’s best Reprise recordings, released between 1962 and 1980, are also featured, including “Night And Day,” “The Way You Look Tonight,” “Fly Me To The Moon (In Other Words),” “Strangers In The Night,” “My Way,” and “Theme From New York, New York.”

"Strangers in the Night"? You gotta' be kidding. While many of the selections in The Best of the Best are actually worthy of the title, other selections are, well, unfortunate. "Love and Marriage" is a nice song, maybe even a good song, but the BEST? And while "Theme from New York, New York" became a Sinatra signature piece, the RECORDING is rather unremarkable (part of the problem, let's face it, is the arrangement). The same holds true for "My Way," an OK song (at BEST) coupled with a rather ordinary recording."The Summer Wind" is a tough one because it happens to be a personal favorite. But one of the BEST? Without much strain, I can think of a lot that should line up ahead of it. A couple of suggestions are in order, I think: first, 2 discs instead of one; Second, the songs should be selected by someone who's done his homework; third, the compilation should range over the three major labels for which Sinatra recorded. Yes, I know I'm leaving out RCA, but I don't think there's much lost there (on the other hand, that premise might be fodder for a good argument); finally, songs should be selected on the basis of musical quality alone. "Hits" based on popularity or the charts are already well represented. In any event, we've been given "Classic" Sinatra, "The Best of..." Sinatra, "Sinatra's Sinatra," and now "The Best of the Best." Isn't it time somebody got it right? I don't know what title is still laying around unused, but I think it's time for a "Best of...." that's actually worthy of the name. Could somebody be put on this right away? Those of us who have been hard-core fans of "Sinatra: The Musician" aren't getting any younger.
