Backstory

Legendary for his ability to melt hearts en masse with his unmistakable voice, Frank Sinatra was unquestionably a master at the art of seduction. As author Bill Zehme observes in the liner notes, “He was, of course, nothing less than the human embodiment of a curled beckoning finger that signaled only, inarguably: ‘Come here, baby . . .’” The inspiration behind SEDUCTION is to bring together those classic songs that represent the pinnacle of Sinatra’s vocal persuasion. It opens with “Prisoner Of Love” and closes with “That’s All”—songs from Sinatra & Strings (1962), an album of romantic ballads featuring lush arrangements by Don Costa. “Misty,” another song from the same album, is one of this deluxe edition’s bonus tracks. While Costa’s romantic orchestrations serve as the bookends for SEDUCTION, much of the collection spotlights Sinatra’s recordings with arranger Nelson Riddle, with whom the singer recorded a number of his most beloved albums. This collection includes nine unforgettable Nelson Riddle collaborations such as “I’ve Got You Under My Skin,” “Witchcraft,” and “It Had To Be You.” The bonus tracks offer three more Riddle arrangements: “I Like To Lead When I Dance” from Robin And The Seven Hoods (1964), “The Look Of Love,” and “Secret Love.”SEDUCTION contains several notable collaborations, including Sinatra with Count Basie and His Orchestra performing Quincy Jones’ arrangement for “More,” the theme from the 1962 Italian movie Mondo Cane. The song first appeared on the 1964 album It Might As Well Be Swing. “I Wish You Love” from the same album is included as a bonus track on the deluxe version. Influential Brazilian guitarist and composer Antonio Carlos Jobim appears on two tracks: “I Concentrate On You” and “This Happy Madness (Estrada Branca).” The first is from 1967’s Francis Albert Sinatra & Antonio Carlos Jobim, and the other from 1971’s Sinatra & Company.

A Magnificent Set

Continuing hot on the heals of 2008's "Nothing But The Best," Frank Sinatra Enterprises brings us another compilation of previously released material recorded by the Chairman during his tenure at Reprise; the recordings dating from 1961's "A Fine Romance" off of the album "Ring-a-Ding," until 1984's "Teach Me Tonight," off of Sinatra's last solo album, "L.A." is My Lady".

Magnificent remastering is what makes this set essential for purchase among Sinatra fans who may or many not have this material already. The tracks off of the album, "Trilogy: Past Present & Future" sound so much better on this album; ditching the echo from the original album and subsequent CD encarnations and going for a wholly dry sound lacking excess echo. You hear Sinatra's voice at age 65 and tremble at how powerful it is and how weak and fragile it can be.

The alternate version of "My Funny Valentine" is also a must hear. the great part about this set is the fact that it's great for long time fans and also a great extra push for new fans who may have heard a few of the iconic songs, ala "My Way" or "Theme from New York, New York." Heck, they may have heard the album "Nothing But The Best." Of course, if you haven't heard that album, I've buy that too.
