Sinatra: The Man & His Movies
4.30.08
Every Sunday & Wednesday in May
May will be Frank Sinatra month at Turner Classic Movies (TCM), which has named Sinatra its artist of the month and will be devoting more than 75 hours of programming, spread out over eight nights, to Sinatra’s films and television specials.
In addition to almost three dozen feature films, including his Oscar-winning role in From Here to Eternity, the programming will showcase four little-seen Sinatra television specials from the 1960s and 1970s, including the Emmy-winning Frank Sinatra: The Man and His Music and his acclaimed “comeback” special, Ol’ Blue Eyes Is Back.
The TCM salute, titled “Frank Sinatra: The Man and His Movies,” will run every Wednesday and Sunday night during the month, beginning at 8:00 pm and running, in most cases, through the night and into the early morning hours. (As a legendary night owl known for encouraging his friends to greet the dawn with him, Sinatra would have approved.) The Wednesday presentations will be hosted by Sinatra’s three children, Nancy, Tina and Frank Jr., who have filmed introductions to 17 of the films.
Altogether, TCM will show 35 feature films, one short (The House I Live In, which won a special Academy Award) and four television programs.
Among the classic films anchoring the Wednesday night broadcasts are From Here to Eternity, for which Sinatra won the Oscar for best supporting actor; The Man with the Golden Arm, which brought him a best actor nomination for what he considered his best performance; The Tender Trap, the 1955 comedy co-starring Doris Day; and the first Rat Pack movie, Ocean’s Eleven.
Other films shown uncut and commercial-free include Pal Joey, The Manchurian Candidate, Cole Porter’s High Society, all three films he made with Gene Kelly (On the Town, Anchors Aweigh and Take Me Out to the Ball Game) and all four Rat Pack films (Ocean’s Eleven, Sergeants 3, 4 for Texas and Robin and the 7 Hoods).
The Sunday night presentations each kick off with a Sinatra television special: the 1965 Emmy-winner Frank Sinatra: The Man and his Music, its 1966 follow-up Frank Sinatra: The Man and His Music, Part II, the 1967 special Frank Sinatra: A Man and His Music + Ella + Jobim, with special guests Ella Fitzgerald and Antonio Carlos Jobim; and Ol’ Blue Eyes Is Back, filmed in 1974 after he ended his short-lived retirement.
